New Year, New Resolutions:

2020 Goals: Keep on the healthiest routine possible. Going to bed earlier (a guilty night owl over here), eating (mostly) healthy food, exercising (longer walks?), and giving myself the best nutrients possible.

Sometimes while on the road or traveling to different countries, access to food can change. And while it’s absolutely still possible to find balanced meals while traveling, vitamins are one of many possible solutions to make sure a spectrum of nutrients are available, no matter where you may be.

This is a featured close look one product you could add to your luggage bag: Ritual Women’s Multi-Vitamins.

What is it?

Ritual vitamins are photogenic, that’s for sure. But the company explains there’s a science behind that bright, beaded look.

Ritual says the beadlet-in-oil technology allows for a delayed release, so the vitamins don’t hit your stomach and body at once, which can cause nausea with nutrient overload. It also allows oily and dry ingredients to be combined into one pill.

The slow-release technology also means you can take it on an empty or full stomach, which provides the added convenience of not having to remember a specific time to take vitamin pills.

Their website explains each component of the Women’s Multivitamin is sourced from around the world: Magnesium from Italy, Vitamin E from Argentina, and Omega-3 algal oil from South Carolina, to name a few.

Each capsule contains nine different nutrients for the regular Essential multivitamins (there’s also a pre-natal option). The names I recognized in the Essential version for every-day women: Iron, Megnesium, Omega – 3, Vitamin B12, Vitamin D3, Biotin.

The ones I did more research on: Boron, Folate, Vitamin E, Vitamin K2, Choline.

Here’s a summary of the scientific claims on how these nutrients affected your body:

  1. Boron: Bone Health, Joint Health — works in combination with Vitamin-D
  2. Folate: Mood, DNA synthesis, Brain Health — works in combination with Vitamin-B
  3. Iron: Brain Health, Energy, Blood Building — works in combination with Vitamin B12 + Folate
  4. Magnesium: Bone Health, Mood, Heart Health — works in combination with Boron and Vitamin K2
  5. Omega-3: Immune Health, Heart Health, Brain Health —  Ritual uses vegan Algal Oil, instead of Fish Oil, which comes from the fermentation of microalgae.
  6. Vitamin B-12: Brain Function, Nerve Function, Energy
  7. Vitamin D-3: Healthy Bones, Immune Support, Cognition
  8. Vitamin E: Antioxident Actions, Skin, Anti-aging
  9. Vitamin K-2: Healthy Skin, Bone Health, Heart Health

My good friend, Julie Bly is a professional Dietician and Nutritionist in Seattle. I sent her the ingredients listed above for her to take a quick look–through.

Her response, “It makes me happy that folate is methylated instead of folic acid. That’s not common. I always look for that.”

I asked, “What does that mean?”

“Basically, folic acid is the synthetic form of folate. Folic acid has been known to cause a myriad of health problems. However, about 60% of the women population are not able to absorb folate so it needs to be methylated. Sad thing is that most prenatal vitamins contain folic acid.”

Simplified: As Ritual claims, Julie found the ingrediants in the vitamins are easier to absorb and generally better than the typical vitamin.

What were the results?

Two biggest differences I noticed, even after the short 2-week trial: the women’s multivitamin stand out from the vitamin market because of the taste and smell.

There’s a minty tab in every Essential women’s multivitamin bottle and a lemon tab in every bottle of the Essential Prenatal. They explain, “Both tabs are made with peppermint and lemon peel oils, respectively, and both tabs make the vitamins more pleasant to take since a lot of people don’t love the ocean-y scent of Omega-3 algal oil.”

I’m definitely one of those people.

Tasting, smelling, or burping up fish oil smells (or any other ingrediant smells) is the biggest multivitamin turn-off for me. I don’t want to feel like I’m taking the vitamin over and over again.

And I didn’t have that problem with Ritual.

Whenever I open the bottle, there’s this natural, minty smell that’s obvious, and it makes the vitamin more taste-friendly. The capsules are also smooth, so it’s easier to take —  without needing much water. I definitely like that I can take them any time I want, but my usual routine is right before bed.

My nails are pretty brittle during the winter, and they break easily. Although I didn’t see a major change in the toughness of my nails, while getting a manicure, the nail technician remarked, “Your nail beds are really long and healthy.” Something I had never heard said to me before.

I did a quick double-take and noticed she was right. It appeared the pink part of my nails were longer, with my nails growing faster too.

My skin was a little bit more difficult for me to track because I use the Organical Botanical herbal apothecary and holistic spa skin-care line made out of Rhode Island (my personal long-time favorite). So I generally think my face has a better glow during the winter, even with the harsh New York City air. But I did notice while taking Ritual, my face appeared smoother.

A New York City friend who also tried Ritual with me sent me a message saying, “I swear these vitamins have healed my dry flakey face! I haven’t noticed a major change in hair or nails, just my skin.” Opinions, also her own.

Ritual is vegan-friendly, and gluten and allergen free, non GMO, and there’s no colorants or synthetic fillers. Those aren’t always guaranteed I can get just grabbing anything from the typical vitamin aisle.

That’s another important factor because I’m definitely someone who reads labels on every product at a grocery store, down to the cereal aisle. Which, is a different conversation. If I can’t pronounce a lot of ingredients, if I notice hydrogenated oil, high fructose corn syrup, artificial sweeteners, I’ll put the product down.

That doesn’t happen with Ritual, so that’s a double thumbs up.

What will it cost me?

One month is $30, which comes with 2 pills a day. There’s free shipping, and you can cancel anytime. You can find out more on Ritual’s website.

Depending on if you also notice effects on your skin, the monthly price is a lot more cost-effective than buying a ton of different over-the-counter skincare products, without any luck.
